Judge declares mistrial in Cara Rintala murder trial

NORTHAMPTON, MA (WSHM) -

A mistrial has been declared in the murder trial of Cara Rintala.

The jury sent a message to the judge late Wednesday afternoon saying that they were unable to reach a verdict and that they unanimously agree they will not be unable to reach one.

Though a mistrial has been declared, the case against Rintala is far from over.

The Commonwealth says they are ready for a second trial

Rintala is accused of killing her wife, Anna Marie Cochrane Rintala, in the couple's Granby home back in March 2010.

Testimony in the trial against her began back on Feb. 20 and the case was sent to the jury last Thursday afternoon. After almost four full days of deliberation, the jury told the judge they were unable to come to a unanimous verdict.

Cara Rintala has been in custody for about 17 months.

As of now, she's being held without the right to bail pending a bail hearing Monday afternoon in Greenfield.
