Atwood, IL (NBC) -

Some Little League organizers in eastern Illinois think they've hit a homerun with this year's raffle.

It's not your typical fundraiser, the grand prize is a deadly weapon.

Organizers in Atwood chose an AR-15 as the grand prize.

They say last year's fundraiser was half of a hog and it was a huge flop.

So to generate more interest, organizers chose one of the hottest guns on the market. But some are asking whether guns and Little League should mix.

"That may sound crazy to a lot of people, but the thing is my kids have all been taught exactly how to handle a gun," said Steven McClain, Atwood-Hammond Little League Commissioner. "They know they're not a toy," he said.

A similar gun raised more than $7,000 for a cancer foundation in that area.

This raffle will be held in June.

The winner will have to pass all background checks and go through the same process as anyone else who buys a gun.
