TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -
Sentencing is delayed for a woman convicted of shooting a Sylvania Township man in the head and then burning down his house.
Melody Williams was scheduled to appear in court at 10:30 a.m. Monday, but a new development pushed back the proceedings. Family members of Williams and victim L.C. Lyons Jr. packed the courthouse for the sentencing.
Victim impact statements are happening at this time, with the sentencing to follow. The sentencing was already supposed to be done, but it has not happened yet because Williams wanted the opportunity to say something.
Williams filed a motion for a new trial. She states there is a major conflict of interest because one of the jurors is a member of City Council. She says there was conspiracy among the jurors and dismissed the two lawyers there to assist her because she says they were part of it.
Sentencing is expected to continue Monday around 1:30 p.m. At that time, victim statements will be read and the court will proceed with the sentencing.
On Friday, Williams was found guilty of aggravated murder, aggravated arson, aggravated robbery, and tampering with evidence.
Tune in to WTOL 11 News at 6 for the latest developments from Nicole Collier at the courthouse.
