Kentucky Mayor killed

A man charged in the shooting death of a western Kentucky mayor has accepted a plea bargain.

KYTN radio (http://bit.ly/Y0vz9t ) in Union City, Tenn., reported Friday that the deal Tommy Lattus' attorney worked out with prosecutors will send the 31-year-old Lattus to prison for more than 37 years.

Under terms of the agreement, Lattus pleaded guilty, but mentally ill Friday before Fulton Circuit Judge Tim Langford.

Lattus was charged with murder in the killing of 68-year-old Mayor Charles Murphy of Hickman, a town of about 2,500 people in southwestern Kentucky.

Police said Lattus drove himself to the Hickman police station early on Jan. 23, 2012, and told officers he had killed Murphy.

A formal sentencing hearing was scheduled for March 28.
