For the second time in his illustrious career at the University of Evansville, senior Colt Ryan was named the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar Athlete of the Year on Thursday afternoon.
Presented at the Coach of the Year Luncheon in downtown St. Louis, the award honors the student-athlete who best demonstrates ability on the court and in the classroom.
Ryan is the third player to receive the award in back-to-back years since it began in 2001-02. Kent Williams of Southern Illinois was the recipient the first two years while Neil Plank of Illinois State was the honoree in 2004-05 and 2005-06.
In 2008-09, former Ace Jason Holsinger became the first player from Evansville to be honored with the award.
Ryan has a 3.432 cumulative GPA in accounting. In addition to earning first-team Scholar-Athlete honors, Ryan also earned first team all-MVC honors for the second-straight season, and was a second team honoree in 2011. He ranks second in the league in scoring (20.0 ppg), fourth in assists (4.1), and sixth in steals (1.6), while his .894 free throw percentage leads the Valley. Ryan is the Purple Aces' second all-time leading scorer, tallying 2,173 points so far in his storied career, which also ranks seventh in the Valley.
Ryan has tallied double-figures in his last 20 consecutive games, and since February 1, leads the Valley with an average of 25.6 points per game.
