EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

There was a big surprise for an unsuspecting Central High coach Tuesday morning.

Alicia Gooch, Central's athletic secretary and boys/girls golf coach, thought she was going to a presentation about the importance of balancing academics and athletics.

Instead, EVSC Superintendent Dr. David Smith named her March's Cause for Applause winner. Mrs. Gooch was chosen, in part, because of all the work she did to put on Central's "Celebrating Our Heritage" alumni reception in January.

"It means everything to me. I guess the reason why it means so much to me is because it was all about the kids. The way I feel about the kids and I guess the way they feel about me. I know they like me okay, I didn't realize they love me, you know what I mean, like they do. I'm glad that they do and it just makes me not want to retire after all," Gooch said.

Mrs. Gooch says the students at Central keep her young and interested. She's been an EVSC employee for more than 20 years.
