WIC vouchers offer new spin on providing fresh produce

Posted: Updated:
EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

More than 1,2000 women and children enrolled in the WIC program in Henderson will be receiving an additional voucher this year.

WIC officials have more than $20,000 set aside for these additional $20 vouchers. They aren't like the traditional EBT cards, these vouchers are for use at the Henderson County Farmer's Market.

The WIC program educates families on eating healthy and living healthy lifestyles. Officials say lower-income families are less likely to purchase and prepare healthy, fresh meals.

So offering vouchers to purchase locally grown produce is a win-win for both sides.

"It does two things, it puts money into the farmer's market in Henderson and the other thing it does is gives WIC participants fresh fruits and vegetables," Health Director Deborah Fillman said.

The Farmer's Market vouchers have been available in Daviess County for several years and officials say success there has made it a program goal for Henderson.
