United Way Day of Caring adds a new twist

Posted: Updated:

The United Way of Southwestern Indiana is putting a twist on it's traditional Spring Day of Caring.

In the past, volunteers have worked with several non-profit agencies for building, landscaping and children's projects.

But this year, organizers have planned a Spring into Caring Food Drive.

The food drive is May 6-11 and encourages local businesses and organizations to collect items to donate.

The week will end with "Stamp Out Hunger" when letter carriers will collect donations along their routes.

Organizers say the numbers of those in need are staggering.

"We get about 20,000 calls a year for people needing assistance and we've seen an increase in the number of calls for food help and last year we had over 6,600 calls for people needing food," United Way President Carol Braden-Clarke said.

The united way is partnering with the Tri-State Food Bank, which provides food to 33 counties.
