OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE) -
We now know who'll be responsible for painting and cleaning the Blue Bridge in Owensboro.
A company called Spartan Contracting LLC has been officially awarded the contract for $10,070,000. This was almost $10.4 million below the engineer's estimate (Engineer's estimate was $20,454,603).
Within a few days, the award will be signed by the Secretary of Transportation. Shortly after that, the contractor will be issued a notice to proceed. At that time the contractor will schedule a meeting with engineers in KYTC District 2 where they will work out a start date for the project.
There will generally be a week or two required for the contractor to "mobilize" or move equipment and materials to the bridge to prepare for work to start.
While the contract allows the bridge to be closed starting May 12th of this year for cleaning and painting of the main truss spans, the contractor can start working beneath the approach spans as quickly as weather allows.
There are also certain temperature requirements for painting that would likely prohibit much activity on the approach spans until daytime temperatures are up in the 50's on a regular basis.
The contract calls for the project to take place over two construction seasons. Again, work could start under the approach spans in the next month. The contractor will not be allowed to close the bridge for painting of the main truss spans until after the International Bar-B-Que Festival in May.
The deadline for the first season is Nov. 15, 2013. The deadline for the second season is Nov. 15, 2014.
Also known as the Blue Bridge and the Glover Cary Bridge the 4,622 ft. structure connects KY 2262 and Indiana State Route 161 over the Ohio River at Owensboro.
Approximately 8,500 vehicles cross the Ohio River on the Blue Bridge between Kentucky and Indiana in an average day. The structure opened to traffic in September 1940 as a toll bridge. The tolls were discontinued in 1954.
