Many march to remember women's suffrage movement

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

People all across the country including right here in the Tri-State are remembering the 100th anniversary of the Women's Suffrage March.

Back on March 3, 1913, women of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority marched down Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington D.C. That historic march is credited with advancing the women's suffrage movement, and on Sunday, those same sorority members are commemorating that march.

Debra Meriweather, of the Evansville chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, helped organize an afternoon reenactment march from the Civic Center to the Museum of Arts, History and Science.

Just under a hundred marchers joined in, and the reenactment was concluded with the play, 'If Not Us, Who? If Not Now, When?' at the museum.

Meriweather says if it wasn't for the brave women who marched on that historic day, Women's Rights wouldn't be in place today. For that, she says, we must never forget them.

"They faced threats, humiliation, it was a life-threatening situation. But they stood boldly and did what they felt needed to be done. Today, we are the benefit," Meriweather said.
