EVSC hosts annual chess tournament

Over 300 Southwestern Indiana students gathered at IVY Tech on Saturday for EVSC's Annual Chess Tournament.

Tournament Coordinator Shirley Cree says the tournament is open to students grades K-12.

It was hosted by Cynthia Heights Elementary School and Cree says many of the participants belong to chess clubs at their schools.

Cree tells 14News the game is important in helping develop students' minds.

"It teaches focusing, ability to focus," says Cree. "It's just a very good, stimulating activity that I hope transfers to like taking the SAT or the ACT."

Cree says this is the 4th annual event.
