EVSC students get ready for ISTEP testing

VANDERBURGH CO., IN (WFIE) -

Schools across Indiana, including here locally, are getting students ready for this spring's ISTEP testing.

14 News talked with school officials today about why its so important for students and parents to prepare.

Many EVSC schools are doing school wide assemblies to get the students ready for the test.

Several schools had them today.

Cynthia Heights had a pep assembly with a motivational speaker and the students even had a Gangnam style dance off.

Over at Lodge Elementary, they had some special visitors for their ISTEP prep. The University of Evansville men's basketball team stopped by to talk about shooting for your goals.

Several other schools had fun activities too.

Susan McDowell Riley with EVSC says activities like this are so important to get the students excited and ready.

"Children need to prepare well in advance so it's really important for kids to be on time to school, to do their homework, so they really know the information," said Riley. "An assembly is not going to help a child do well on ISTEP if they don't already know the material. The reason we have those gatherings is just to charge the kids up and get them excited and have them understand the importance of the impact they bring to how well they do on the test," she said.

Riley says parents should make sure their students are well rested and have a good breakfast the day of testing.

Cedar Hall will have their assembly on Monday.
