New mental health center opens in Evansville

Posted: Updated:

A new mental illness recovery center is opening Thursday in Evansville.

The center is located at Southwestern's Community Support Services Facility on Mulberry Street.

The facility is called the Peace Zone and it's set to open at 1:00 p.m. Thursday.

It will provide peer to peer counseling and help with employment services.

Directors tell 14 News the center is meant to be a social outlet for those wanting help.

They hope the Peace Zone will create an awareness for mental health issues and that people will come who wouldn't normally seek treatment.

The new center is made possible by a grant, which they received from the Indiana Department of Mental Health and Addictions.

Important note: The Mulberry Street Building currently houses Southwestern's Community Support Services, which will continue operating in the building.

You do not have to be a client of Southwestern to come to the Peace Zone.

They're looking volunteers.  You can find out more about volunteering here.

Also, they plan to have an open house in March. We'll let you know when they decide on a date.
