Pope Begins Last Day
Pope Benedict flies off into retirement soon after a quiet final day as pontiff. No major speech is expected during his farewell meeting today with his closest advisers, just a simple greeting to each one inside the Clementine Hall of the Apostolic Palace. He'll then take a helicopter to the papal retreat south of Rome. We'll have live coverage from the Vatican this morning on Sunrise.
Even as Democrats and Republicans try to avoid public blame for mandatory, across the board spending cuts, competing packages they're offering in the Senate today appear doomed. Democrats in control of the Senate are pushing a plan to block the cuts through the end of the year. Republicans are offering to give President Barack Obama the authority to redistribute the cuts with restrictions.
