Final report card ratings for Ohio's school districts were released Wednesday.
The state report card is a yearly progress report that reviews factors, such as student achievement, graduation rates and academic growth over the years. The report cards were released slightly late this year, after a statewide investigation into attendance tampering slowed the process.
For the 2010-2011 school year, Toledo Public Schools were classified as "continuous improvement," which means they were below expected growth for at least three consecutive years. For the 2011-2012 school year, TPS fell to "academic watch," meeting only four of the 26 standards of performance. They are just one level above the lowest rating: "academic emergency."
Some Toledo parents are keeping a watchful eye on the district's report card.
"It's important to make sure the kids are on point and on track with their education. That's what it's all about. That's what they're going to school for," said parent Pam Smotherman.
The results this year are not what they wanted to see. The report card says TPS' adequate yearly progress was "not met."
Smotherman chooses to homeschool her kids and thinks if report cards like this keep coming out, others might too. She says she has not written off public schools just yet and would consider sending her kids back.
"I would if things were put in place and there were tools to help them," explained Smotherman.
Other parents agreed.
"The children are the future and we need to make sure they have what they need for their education. We need to attack that now. It needs to be addressed today," said Rito Sigarroa.
TPS Superintendent Dr. Jerome Pecko says the district is disappointed by this report, but not surprised. He says they have improvement plans in place and believe next year's score will be better.
