Hilltoppers give Akol the heave-ho

Western Kentucky has dismissed senior center Teeng Akol from the team.

Akol started 16 of 27 games this season and averaged 6.7 points and 3.8 rebounds per contest. Hilltoppers coach Ray Harper said Akol will remain on scholarship to focus on academics and earn his degree, adding, "that's what's best for him and this basketball team at this time."

His dismissal follows other disciplinary action.

The 6-foot-11, 220-pound South Sudan native had missed two of WKU's last five games for academic reasons. He was also suspended for the first three games of the 2011-12 season for violating team rules.

Akol transferred to WKU from Oklahoma State during the 2009-10 season. He scored a career-high 23 points against North Texas in last year's Sun Belt Conference tournament championship.
