Two house fires break out in less than an hour in Owensboro

OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE) -

Firefighters stayed busy early Sunday morning responding to two house fires less than an hour apart in Owensboro.

According to the fire department's Facebook page, the first fire began at 1:40 a.m. in the 1700 block of W. 9th. St.
 
A 14 year old was able to wake up the family after he smelled smoke.
 
They all got out of the house safely and grabbed the family pet.
 
Crews contained the fire to the back of the home.

At 2:35 a.m., another fire started in the 2200 block of W. 10th St.
 
A passerby pulled a woman from the home who was taken to the hospital conscious and alert.
 
The family was able to return home after firefighters controlled the fire which also started in the back of the house.

Fire investigators say the cause of each fire is under investigation, but says right now they do not believe that they are linked.
 
The Red Cross is assisting both families.

    A candlelight vigil is planned for the teen killed in an ATV crash. DNR officers say 14-year-old Caleb Poehlein went to pass a friend on another ATV, lost control, and crashed.
