(RNN) - Despite dodging most of the tax hikes associated with the fiscal cliff less than two months ago, politicians in Washington find themselves back at the bargaining table to avoid across-the-board cuts in the budget sequester.

Various entitlement programs, transportation safety departments and defense spending could see drastic reductions.

Officials in Atlanta arrested a man after he allegedly hit a toddler aboard a Delta Air Lines flight from Minneapolis. The child's mother claimed the man was intoxicated before the flight took off and that he hit her son while the 19-month-old was crying.

In Los Angeles, police are investigating the death of a Canadian tourist who was found inside a hotel water tank. Investigators said the woman was likely decomposing in the tank for more than two weeks.

Meanwhile, paraolympian Oscar Pistorius was arraigned for premeditated murder in a South African court. Detectives said the gold medalist shot and killed his supermodel girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
