A southwestern Illinois man who tried to extort a former St. Louis Cardinals player is heading back to federal prison after having his supervised release revoked because of drug violations.
A judge has ordered 54-year-old George Edwards of Shiloh to serve two years behind bars after he recently tested positive for cocaine and possessed that drug and marijuana.
Edwards pleaded guilty in 2007 to a wire-fraud count linked to an extortion case targeting someone never publicly identified. But a person familiar with the investigation told The Associated Press then that the target was now-retired Cardinals second baseman Ronnie Belliard.
Prosecutors argued Edwards sought $150,000 from his target in exchange for keeping quiet because that person supposedly got Edwards' daughter pregnant after the pair met at a St. Louis nightclub.
