2 semis and car crash on Turnpike in Fulton County

FULTON COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A multiple-vehicle accident closed the Ohio Turnpike in both directions Thursday around 10:30 a.m. near milepost 32 in Fulton County. All lanes have been reopened.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, John Adams, 62, of Kelseyville, CA, was driving a semi truck eastbound on the Ohio Turnpike when he lost control and drove off the left side of the roadway, crossing through the median and overturning. The semi truck continued in the westbound lanes, striking a semi truck driven by Joshua Shontz, 22, of Oil City, PA, and a Chevrolet HHR driven by Vance McCrumb, 70, of Milan, MI. The Ohio Turnpike accident/incident team said Shontz saw the accident happening but couldn't do anything to stop, so he jumped to the other side of his cab and ducked down.

After impact, Adams' and McCrumb's vehicles left the north side of the roadway and came to rest in the ditch. The trailers of Adams and Shontz remained on the roadway blocking the westbound lanes.

Adams' truck was hauling general freight. Shontz' truck was hauling lumber. Both spilled their loads onto the roadway. According to Toledo News Now's Nicole Collier, one truck was full of audio/visual equipment labeled "Swedish House Mafia, San Francisco, CA." They were making the trip from Chicago to their next venue in Toronto.

No hazmat crews were called to the scene because no fuel spilled.

The Jaws of Life were used to extricate Adams and McCrumb. Workers said it took a very long time to get out McCrumb. They were both taken to Toledo hospitals by air ambulance.

OSHP says Adams and McCrumb both have non-life-threatening injuries. Shontz was able to free himself without assistance and also has non-life-threatening injuries. According to OSHP, McCrumb and Shontz were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash. However, seatbelt use for Adams is unknown.

Traffic was at a standstill. According to OSHP dispatcher, eastbound and westbound lanes of the Turnpike closed between SR 108 and SR 66 after the crash. The accident happened near milepost 32, two miles west of Wauseon. All westbound traffic was diverted off of the Wauseon Interchange at exit 34. The westbound lanes of the Ohio Turnpike were closed for approximately three hours.

The crash remains under investigation.
