As Canada discontinues their penny, the Great American Hero Deli in Dallas, TX shows how they've done it for years.
Dallas, TX (PRWEB) February 21, 2013
As Canada has started the process of abolishing their penny, Dominick Oliverie, owner of The Great American Hero Deli thinks he can show them how it’s done. The Deli abolished the penny in their restaurant over eight years ago. Every penny that has entered the shop since then has been donated to charity.
The Great American Hero Deli’s “pennyless policy” requires all orders be rounded up or down to the nearest nickel. Oliverie says, “Eliminating the penny has made things much simpler. It helps the cashiers work faster and I’ve never had a customer complain that their pennies are going towards a good cause.”
The penny jar has helped all sorts of charities in the region. The five gallon jug on their counter is currently being filled for Dallas Lighthouse for the Blind. Some of the past organizations include the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital, Visiting Nurses & Meals on Wheels, SPCA, Nexus Rehab for Women, as well as Genisus Women’s Center with the biggest donation, $1,001.02.
With countries like Australia penniless, and Canada discontinuing their penny due to its high cost of production, the US has started to consider it as well. Oliverie has been told that his business may be the only in the country that has abolished the penny for so many years.
The Penny jar says: "Goal: common cents; Mission: pennies from heaven; We're making neighborhood angels." Oliverie doesn’t plan to end this practice, and hopes to continue choosing neighborhood charities that can use a little help.
