WESTERN KY (WFIE) -
A national program rewarding heroes all over the country is now up and running in western Kentucky. Homes for Heroes gives back to local heroes when they buy or sell a home.
Timothy Meserve has lived in Hawesville his whole life and recently retired from the Hawesville Volunteer Fire Department.
"When I see the ambulance go out or the rescue truck or see a fire truck go by, I wonder where they are going to and all of that. It's kind of a bitter sweet thing after retiring after 40 years," Meserve said.
Meserve is trying to sell the house he grew up in. Being a retired firefighter qualifies him for Homes for Heroes, a national program that allows local realtors to give money back to first responders, veterans, military personal, teachers, and medical workers.
"Since I am a Homes for Heroes realtor affiliate, I donate 25 percent of my commission back to the buyer or seller," said Justin Nugent with Raymer Real Estate Services.
In Meserve's case, when someone buys Meserve's home, 25 percent of the realtor's commission from selling the house will be deducted from Meserve's closing cost. The discount is a way for the realtor to thank him for his years of service as a first responder.
"Purchasing a home is one of the biggest investments you'll ever make. This is an opportunity to give back to that hero that lays his life on the line every time he is called out," Nugent said.
