KENTUCKY (WFIE) -
At
a press conference on Wednesday in Louisville, Sen. Rand Paul announced that he will
be returning $600,000 to the United States Treasury, money unspent from his
official operating budget.
The total amount being returned is more than 20
percent of Sen. Paul's original office budget.
Sen. Paul returned $500,000 to
the Treasury last year, contributing to the $1.1 million in money unspent from
his operating budget since he took office.
"I
ran to stop the reckless spending, and I pledged to the people of Kentucky that
I would work to keep their hard-earned money out of the hands of Washington
bureaucrats whose irresponsible spending has threatened our country's economic
health," Sen. Paul said.
At the press conference, Sen. Paul presented taxpayers with an over-sized check
for $600,000, representing the money being returned to the Treasury.
Sen.
Paul will also introduce legislation this year incentivizing federal employees
to identify and eliminate wasteful programs in their respective agencies.
