Carol Schroader has lived on her farm in Horse Branch, Ky for 40 years. Her favorite part of living in Ohio County is being in the country. "I live here with my husband Roger and our three foster children. We love living in the country. It's the best place to raise kids," said Carol Schroader.
Schroader and her husband have raised five children before becoming foster parents eight years ago. Schroaderl has been a foster mother to 100 children since she became a foster parent. "They come up to you and say, 'Mom, I love you. You are the best Mom we ever had. You make the best food, Mom.' Things like just melt your heart," said Schroader.
Benchmark Family Services, a therapeutic foster care agency in Owensboro said there is a huge need for foster families in Western Kentucky. "We need more foster parents because children are abused and neglected on a daily basis and we need to break the cycle of abuse," said Amanda Boyd, Licensing Specialist with Benchmark Family Service, "We need to help them relearn how to appropriately function in society."
Amanda Boyd was a foster mother before adopting five of her foster kids. She says a lot of people are misinformed about the process of becoming a foster parent. Benchmark Family Services said it only takes a few steps:
1). FBI Check
2). KY Circuit court Criminal Record Check
3). Child Abuse Registry Check
4). Home Study
5). Safety Audit of the Home
7). 36 Hours of Face to Face Training
8). First Aid, CPR, and Bloodborne Pathogen Training
9). Physical Examination
10). You must be at least 21 years old.
