Amesbury, Massachusetts (NBC) -

A collection of nearly 2000 items of John F. Kennedy memorabilia, formerly owned by an aide and friend to the late president, was sold at auction today near Boston.

David Powers was a close friend and personal assistant to president Kennedy who later became the first curator of the Kennedy presidential library and museum.

Powers died in 1998, but his family first found the enormous memorabilia collection last year while preparing to sell the family home.

The collection included hundreds of photographs, documents and gifts.

Also included is a handwritten document describing kennedy's final hours.
