LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Senator Rand Paul was in the national spotlight Tuesday night and he didn't mince words. Florida senator and rising GOP star Marco Rubio provided the Republican response, the man many believe is a rising star in his own right, and possibly Rubio's biggest threat in 2016, provided the Tea Party response to the president's speech.
Paul took on both Republicans and Democrats. He said both parties are guilty of over spending, protecting their sacred cows and of backroom deals where taxpayers lose. Paul called for a bipartisan effort to cut the deficit.
Paul went on to say that Washington acts in a way that your family never could by spending money they don't have, borrowing from future generations and then both sides blaming each other for not fixing the problem. If Congress refuses to pass a budget and read bills, Paul asked voters to "sweep the place clean. Limit their terms and send them home."
"The president seems to think the country can continue to borrow $50,000 every second," said Paul. "The president believes that if we can just squeeze more money out of those working… I don't think it will work. The path we are on is not sustainable, but few in Congress or this administration seem to recognize their actions are endangering the prosperity of this great nation."
Paul's comments did not make the national broadcast on any network. Rubio's response was a little longer than expected and much of the talk after him was about his reaching for a water bottle more than anything.
