EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -
Organizers of the Mardi Gras Bar Crawl on Evansville's west side are calling the first-time event, a huge success, and businesses along Franklin Street seem to agree.
So many people came down to Franklin Street, there's already talk of adding another big event soon.
Tuesday morning was all quiet at Leroy's Tavern. A calm retreat after a crazy Friday night.
"We iced beer down just as quick as we could possibly, put it in the ice and people were buying it just as soon as it got cold," Leroy's owner, Terri Carl said.
They bought so much, the tavern saw its highest one day sales since it opened 43 years ago.
"It doubled and tripled what kind of a crowd came through here during the Fall Festival," Carl told 14 News.
There was similar success at other watering holes. Some serving so many they ran out of beer. But it's not just bars and restaurants who benefited.
"I like the energy and excitement that this creates," said Shawn Eickhoff with Paul's Menswear.
Eickhoff got in the Mardi Gras spirit, too. For her, the crawl was a chance to attract new customers.
"When you have that many people down here, just seeing your business and being exposed to that and the other things available on Franklin Street, it's got to be good for business," Eickhoff said.
Feedback like that has president of the Franklin Street Events Association, Leah Spivey, feeling pretty good.
"The turnout was amazing. It far, far reached past our expectations," Spivey said.
As president of the newly formed Franklin Street Events Association, she's a big reason Friday's crawl happened in the first place.
She says there's more where that came from.
"The street has so much potential and it's just not being used. So that was just our goal to bring fun to Evansville. To really create Franklin Street to be the center of it, the heart," Spivey said.
"It's really, really important because we've got great people on the west side that just have always been so loyal to the west side businesses, and I think this will help. It kind of gives a focus," Carl said.
There's another event planned for Earth Day on April 20th. There will be a 5k run down Franklin Street, a farmers market, artwork and free seedlings that will be handed out to kids.
After seeing how successful Friday's bar crawl was, Spivey tells 14 News they're thinking about doing something similar for St. Patrick's Day.
