NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A high-ranking official in the Davidson County Sheriff's Office is off the job because of something that happened in a courtroom last week.

Corley Pearson was placed on administrative leave after he had an exchange with Judge Casey Moreland on Friday for failing to release a prisoner, officials said.

Pearson has been with the sheriff's department for 16 years and is the director of the armed services division.

The sheriff's office said it never received the release from the court clerk's office.

Moreland held Pearson in contempt of court and ordered him into custody, at which point Pearson removed his weapon to surrender it to another sheriff's office employee.

Pearson was later told to leave the courtroom.

He was never placed in custody or charged with any criminal offense.
