Clevenger leaving Henderson Co.

Clay Clevenger, who spent the past six years as Henderson County's head football coach, resigned today to accept the coaching position at Danville, his alma mater.

"It's about more than a football job. It's an opportunity to go back home and raise our kids around their grandparents. It had more to do with that than anything else," said Clevenger. He and wife Kate are expecting their second child in early July. Both of their families live in the Danville area.

Clevenger posted a 45-27 record at Henderson County, where he took over a program that was in turmoil following the death of player Ryan Owens after a 2006 practice.

After being hired just weeks before the start of practice for the 2007 season, Clevenger lost his first six games but soon his program was a model of stability. The Colonels reached the region finals three straight years, losing to Greenwood in 2009, Male in 2010 and Butler in 2011. He ends his tenure at Henderson County with four straight nine-win seasons.

At Danville, he will succeed his former coach Sam Harp, who resigned in December after 25 seasons at the school to become the head coach at Lebanon, Tenn.

Clevenger played on two of Harp's seven state championship teams. Danville has won 10 state titles overall but none since 2003. He will inherit a team that finished 9-4 and lost to Somerset in the 2-A regional finals.
