New rescue mission opens doors to more people in need

Posted: Updated:

After almost a year of construction and renovations, the new Evansville Rescue Mission opened its doors. The new residence is open for homeless men 18 years and older.

Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke joined the ceremony, declaring the start of Evansville Rescue Mission Week.

The new facility can house 160 homeless men and up to 200 individuals during extreme conditions. One volunteer says the rescue mission has a huge impact on the city.

"I think a pretty big one, especially listening to the gentleman talk about his life. Everything is going good one day and the next you're out of work. It can be scary sometimes and without something like the rescue mission, where would people go," Mark Morgan said.

The new locations will host weekly AA meetings and a new spiritual development program. The new building can support thirty-percent more people than before.
