LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – The first Bardstown police officer killed in the line of duty in the department's 150-year history was ambushed, possibly from a hilltop, according to the Jefferson County Coroner's
The coroner said a 12-gauge shotgun was used to shoot K-9 Officer Jason Ellis multiple times -- possibly from a hilltop -- early Saturday morning on an off-ramp leading from the Bluegrass Parkway to Highway 55 in Nelson County.

A massive manhunt continues tonight in Southern California for Chris Dorner, the ex-LAPD officer blamed for three murders.

Police say they're now looking outside of California for the 33-year-old but weather is making things difficult.

Crews are focusing their search near the Big Bear Mountain area east of L.A..

That's where Dorner was last seen allegedly during a shootout with police and setting his own truck on fire.

But tracks leading away from the truck were a dead end for police.

"We continued to follow them until we lost them when the ground got frozen," says Sheriff John McMahon of the San Bernardino County Sheriff's office. "We couldn't continue to track."

So far, the daughter of a retired LAPD captain and her fiance have been found murdered.

Then on Thursday, police say Dorner shot three officers in Riverside and Corona, killing one of them.

Police sat Dorner wrote a Facebook manifesto before the killings, that said his anger has been simmering since being fired from the force.
