LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Prosecutors are learning of new victims connected to a photographer accused of accepting payments for weddings and not following through with his clients.
Ramon Rodriguez is charged with multiple theft charges and plans to pay restitution as part of a guilty plea, according to his attorney Brian Butler. Currently, there are 12 clients totaling more than $16,000 in contracts that were not fulfilled.
Prosecutors were close to sealing a plea deal with Rodriguez, but delayed the court hearing because investigators discovered new victims.
"We found out there are more cases in district court or those who have not instigated cases, yet. We want to reach out to the victims of those cases," Asst. Commonwealth Attorney Elizabeth Jones Brown said.
Jones Brown said there may be another five to 10 clients out there who claim they didn't receive photos from their weddings hear back from Rodriguez after they signed the dotted line.
Rodriguez surrendered to authorities in Niagara County, NY on January 3, and has been extradited to Louisville Metro Department of Corrections.
Several of Rodriguez's clients contacted WAVE 3, claiming he took thousands of dollars from them and didn't show up for their weddings and special events.
Multiple arrest warrants had been issued for Rodriguez. According to one of the warrants, Rodriguez escaped from the custody of LMDC Community Corrections Center on April 25, 2009 by failing to return to the facility following an authorized work release. Police said Rodriguez was to remain in custody pending a court date on May 4, 2009 for charges including assault, wanton endangerment and DUI.
After he escaped, police said Rodriguez failed to return money to his clients. Rodriguez had closed his business on East Broadway.
Since Rodriguez turned himself in, he's promised to pay all the cash back. "He wants to do that. Otherwise, he wouldn't have surrendered himself. That's his goal - to pay these people back who have legitimate claims," Butler said.
Rodriguez is expected back in court February 22 to accept a plea deal and a resolution to pay back his former clients.
