The Ohio State Highway
Patrol (OSHP) has increased their enforcement for Super Bowl weekend.
The Super Bowl often means
parties and drinking for many people, so police plan to be extra alert to keep
the roads safe.
Sgt. Jared Ulynski of the OSHP
said any traffic violation will raise a red flag for patrol officers, but
repeat offenses will tip them off to alcohol use.
"You'll see more than one
lane violation," he explained. "If somebody's looking at you, they might commit
one lane violation and stop. But when people are impaired, they just tend to
weave back and forth from lane to lane because their perception of time and
motor skills are impaired due to the alcohol…Speeding is another one we see a
lot of."
Ulynski said OSHP has
received federal aid money, which they put to use by putting extra officers on
patrol for the weekend.
In 2012, OSHP arrested
25,000 people for impaired driving, which includes alcohol use, drug use, or
both. That number was up by about 1,000 from 2011.
"And unfortunately, 766
people lost their lives last year due to impaired driving," Ulynski said. "So
obviously that's unacceptable, and that's why we're taking a proactive approach
to put more officers on the road to help remove those impaired drivers off the
roadway."
The blitz will run from 7
p.m. Friday through 3 a.m. Monday.
