NEWTOWN, CT (WFSB) -

The Board of Education in Newtown voted to recommended the addition of school resource officers at every elementary school in the town at a meeting Thursday night.

A pair of reported camouflaged prowlers prompted a private security officer to lock the doors earlier than usual at the meeting. After the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in December, any potential threat is taken seriously.

But, it turns out there was nothing to be worried about at all.

"It was hikers that were in the area," said Board of Education Chairwoman Debbie Martha Leidlein. "Apparently they weren't in our general vicinity, but there were somewhere on the complex. Just as a precaution (security) did lock the doors a bit early, but it's normal for this time of night that they would lock the doors while we were having a meeting. So (security) just came in and let us know what was going on."

At the meeting, the board voted to recommend hiring school resource officers for all of Newtown's elementary schools.

The recommendation will now go to the Board of Selectmen for a vote.

"We requested that we have additional police officers added to our elementary schools," Leidlein said. "So, as our security commission continues to explore our needs in the near future and further along, we will then decide what that number is."
