SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -
Springfield High School of Science and Technology has given more than 50 students out-of-school suspensions for wandering the hallways during class time. The suspensions were handed down as part of the school's tough new policy to crack down on students who hang out in the halls instead of going to class.
According to Springfield Public Schools spokesperson Azell Cavaan, an announcement was made over the school's loudspeaker prior to the final class period stating that any student who was not in class by the time the bell rang would be suspended. Cavaan says that around 50 students received suspensions. Around 1,300 students attend SciTech.
"They can all come back to school tomorrow, and the principal is actually hoping to sit down with the parents of these kids and really crack down on the importance of being not only in school, but in class once the bell rings," said Cavaan.
School officials say they have had problems with students wandering the halls since the start of the year. They added that an in-house suspension, which was the previous penalty, was not preventing students from wandering the halls.
