Be safe during the upcoming severe weather

Officials say to make sure your weather radio is plugged in and that the batteries work.

You should also check to make sure you have batteries for a portable radio, in case you lose power. All of this should be a part of your preparedness kit.

"In your kit you should have supplies like a First Aid kit, a flashlight, extra batteries, food, water.  If something severe does hit, you need those supplies that you can get readily available so that you can take care of yourself and your family should the storm hit and it be bad," said Julie Krizen with the Red Cross.

Red Cross officials also advise you keep your cellphone charged, in case of an emergency.

Here are some more tips from the Red Cross:

During any storm, listen to local news or a NOAA Weather Radio to stay informed about watches and warnings.

Know your community's warning system. Communities have different ways of warning residents about tornados, with many having sirens intended for outdoor warning purposes.

Pick a safe room in your home where household members and pets may gather if a tornado or thunderstorm warning takes place. This should be a basement, storm cellar or an interior room on the lowest floor with no windows.
