WEBSTER CO., KY (WFIE) -

Students and staff at Webster County high school are excited to be off tomorrow and they have the women's basketball team to thank.

For the first time in more than seven years, the team has advanced to the semifinals of the State All A Classic.

The school decided to cancel classes on Wednesday and Friday to make it easier for students to get to the tournament in Frankfort.

"It's awesome,  love to get out of school anytime we can," Webster County senior Daniel Boswell said.

Hundreds of other students are also cheering, both for a day off school and for the Lady Trojans basketball team.

"It's been really excited out here the past few days. After the game we came back to school and the hallways were decorated and all the windows were written on and everyone is just really excited and proud of the girls," Webster County senior Taylor Wilson said.

Led by first-year head coach Parker McCalister, the team sets a high standard in the community.

"Our girls have traditionally been the torch bearers for our athletics department and we have tremendous tradition for our girls basketball teams. There's been several opportunities over the years, for our girls team to make it to the state tournament at the end of the year," Principal Tim Roy said.

A goal, men's basketball player Daniel Boswell thinks is in the cards for the team this year.

"I'm a big fan of coach McCalister, he's new here but I'm a big fan of him already, he's made a believer out of me...that he can get it done," he said.

Defense and speed are the team's strong points.
"They can really lock down on defense, anytime they need to and they can really push and get up and down the court real fast,"  Boswell said.

Webster County High School operates on a 4-day school week. The days they've been given off to support the team, are scheduled to be made up on Mondays in the coming weeks.
