Another fake Twitter account has surfaced and this time the NFL says it was used to contact Washington Redskins players.
In the wake of the Manti Te'o scandal, a former Washington Redskins player warned the team of a fake Twitter/Facebook/Instagram account that has been contacting several Redskins players for months, NFL.com reports.
Former player Phillip Daniels, who is now director of player development for the team, put a memo up on the wall of the locker room this past December that stated: "Stay away for @RedRidnH00d. Avoid her on Twitter. Avoid her on Instagram. Do not converse with this person on any social media platform. She is not who she claims to be."
During the Redskins playoff run of seven straight victories, they had to be warned of their own role in a completely separate, coincidentally timed and ultimately less harmful saga of false online identities of that of college football player Manti Te'o.
NFL security conducted an investigation into this situation that involved "Sidney Ackerman,"who used pictures of an Internet adult entertainer, C.J. Miles, to establish connections and dialogues with pro athletes. In wake of this investigation, on Monday, both Ackerman's twitter and Facebook profiles were deleted by the account holder.
NFL.com cites multiple sources who say Ackerman connected with players by talking about the team through Twitter's direct messaging function and later sent some players pictures of Miles to personal cell phones which led to on and off conversations for months.
The team did find out that "Ackerman" is indeed a woman and diehard Redskins fan who never asked for money or benefits, nor did she attempt to threaten or exploit any players. Many players attempted to arrange meetings with her that went unsuccessful. The numerous failed attempts led the team to suspect that "Ackerman" was fake.
