Officials stress safety during winter weather - 14 News, WFIE, Evansville, Henderson, Owensboro

KY residents encouraged to take winter weather safety steps

Posted: Updated:

In Kentucky, officials want to make sure residents are prepared for more winter weather, especially with the possibility of some snow in Thursday's forecast.

To help you get through any more stretches of cold temperatures and winter storms, the National Weather Service in Paducah has compiled some pointers to keep in mind.

Make sure your car's stocked with things like blankets, sleeping bags, and a first aid kit.

If you happen to get stuck while traveling during bad weather, stay in your car and run the motor for about 10 minutes every hour for heat.

There are also things you can do at home.

Keep a flashlight and extra batteries handy, as well as a battery powered weather radio and non-perishable food.

If you take medicine, keep some extra on hand in case you aren't able to get to a pharmacy or your doctor for a few days.

That's something people may have a tendency to forget.

And like 14 News emphasized yesterday, always remember to dress in layers during cold weather, especially if you're going to be outside for an extended period of time.
