A Gary judge has repaid the city $787 after state auditors told her she can't use city funds to buy Christmas cards.
A State Board of Accounts audit released Monday says City Judge Deidre Monroe used a city-issued credit card to buy 500 imprinted holiday cards in November 2011. Auditors say that's not allowed under state rules.
Monroe tells The Times that she has received Christmas cards from elected officials in the past and wasn't aware she couldn't use city funds to buy and send her own.
She says Christmas cards are used to tell people "I am thinking of you during the Christmas season." She says it's important that the citizens of Gary know her court is there to serve them.
