Big Brother Big Sister calling you to 'Man Up For Mentoring'

Posted: Updated:

Big Brothers Big Sisters needs more volunteers, especially men.

They're holding a special event in Evansville this Thursday to help get more people involved in mentoring local youth.

That event is called "Man Up For Mentoring." It's Thursday evening at the Tin Man Brewing Company on Franklin Street in Evansville.

Executive Director for the Ohio Valley Region, Anna Hargis, says Big Brothers Big Sisters organizations in the Tri-State have about twice as many women volunteers as men.

She says in the community programs, Big Brothers and Sisters interact with a child two to four times a month, taking them places like the zoo or out to lunch.

Hargis says Thursday's event is a barbeque dinner at Tin Man, along with a silent auction of items like tickets to sporting events, and a short presentation about what it means to help out kids in the community.

"I don't think it's because women care more. I really do think the men in our community want to invest in our kids, but sometimes we're not sure what we're getting into. So, we're just trying to demystify what it means to be a Big Brother and really say it's just hanging out with a kid," Hargis said.

"Man Up For Mentoring" is from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Thursday at Tin Man Brewing Company. For more information you can call, 812-425-6076.

For event ticket information, head to the Man Up For Mentoring website.

Also for those who want more information about mentoring, there will be a free half hour informational session for adults on February 12th at noon in Central Library.
