JEFFERSONVILLE, IN (WAVE) - The Mayor of Jeffersonville is under investigation by the city council over allegations he misused his city credit card. Now, council members are getting the state involved in the investigation.

It has been a rough month for Jeffersonville Mayor Michael Moore.

In December, Moore had to explain a very public fight in city hall with his soon to be ex-wife.

Now, that embarrassing personal incident is givIng way to professional allegations after council member Lisa Gill and Council President Connie Sellers confirm the finance committee is investigating alleged misuse of the Mayor's city credit card.

The finance committee wants to know whether the Mayor violated a city ordinance that says charges can be reimbursed only with itemized receipts. In some cases, sources say Moore has been getting paid back for receipts that only have the overall charge.

The finance committee is reviewing the mayor's expense claims back to January 2012.

In an email, Council President Sellers said she's still uncertain if mayor Moore did anything wrong and is asking state investigators for assistance.

"I am requesting that the state board of accounts review the credit card receipts to see if any irregularities have occurred," Sellers said.

In a separate email, council member Gill said the investigation is a matter of due diligence.

"I assure the taxpayers that all past claims are being examined and all future credit card claims will be closely looked at by the Council to make sure they are in compliance," wrote Gill. "Inquiry into this matter is still ongoing but procedures will be implemented to see that tax dollars are protected."

City attorney Les Merkley said Mayor Moore isn't the only elected official who doesn't turn in itemized receipts, promising to forward those copies to the State Board of Accounts along with Mayor Moore's.

In a statement, Mayor Moore called the investigation "political gamesmanship."

"It's ironic that the same expenditures the council is now questioning are ones that it previously approved at public meetings without any hesitation or debate," Moore wrote. "But I welcome any independent review of the finances and expenditures of the Mayor's office. I hope these same council members will seek the same review of their own expenditures. "

Sources say there are two charges in particular the council is scrutinizing, $1,311 at Home Depot and $140 at a Clarksville bicycle store. In both cases Mayor Moore produced itemized receipts for those charges to a reporter.
