OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE) -

The gun law debate ramped up following the December shooting massacre at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, but now the president's proposal is being met with big opposition.

Our cameras weren't allowed inside, but the parking lot at the gun show Saturday was jammed packed.

Organizers say a direct result of people fearing their second amendment rights will be limited or taken away.

"They're buying the controversial type weapons that are being called assault weapons and high capacity magazines. They're out buying what they can now before those limitation come into effect," said Robert Alvey, a gun show promoter.

Following President Obama's call for stricter gun regulations and a ban on assault weapons. Gun shows like the one in Owensboro had thousands of people eager to make purchases. But Andrew Hawkins has a different opinion.

"I hear a lot of people talking about people coming to a gun show out of fear for their rights and I don't think that the case. People's been going to gun shows their whole lives," Hawkins said.

Hawkins explanation for the increase in gun show attendants.

"Everything's been consumed up, because people are buying before they lose and that could be a possibility there," Hawkins said.

Drew Young said his support of second amendment rights is for his 6-year-old son. He feels safer with the increased gun sales.

"What percentage actually happens? A small percentage of legal owners do, to make illegal acts," Young said.

That small percentage of guns used illegally is said to be responsible for the deaths of 12 people at the Aurora, Colorado movie theatre shooting, six people at the Sikh Temple in Wisconsin, and 26 lives at Sandy Hook. Just three of seven mass shootings in 2012.

More victims were killed and wounded in mass shootings in 2012 than in any previous year.

President Obama said he wants to use common sense measures to uphold second amendment rights while keeping guns out of the hands of irresponsible citizens.
