Officials seek to lower speed limit on dangerous section of Hwy 231

Posted: Updated:

Officials want to lower the speed limit on a two-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 231 between Hartford and Beaver Dam.

The Sheriff and Judge Executive sent a letter to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet this week wanting the to reduce the speed limit on U.S. Hwy 231 to 35 miles per hour. Sheriff David Thompson, the Beaver Dam Police Chief, says that in the last three weeks there have been three car accidents near mile marker 11, one of them being fatal. He also says reducing the speed will make the road a lot safer.

"By keeping the speed limits the way they are is not working. We are having too many accidents," says Sheriff Thompson. "We have had two deaths already. You know? when is enough is enough? something has to be done."

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says it will conduct a speed study in the near future to determine what should be done.
