SPRINGFIELD, OH (Toledo News Now) - With flu season in full swing, germs are everywhere. Keeping your family flu-free can become a job of its own. One local school district is trying to keep the flu out of its classrooms.
Parents can work on beating the flu when their kids are at home. But when they send them to school, the classroom can be a playground for flu germs.
Springfield school officials say they have measures in place to keep the more than 4,000 kids in their district healthy. According to officials, there is an intensive cleaning regimen that disinfects high-traffic areas of the school, especially flat surfaces, like students' desks. Also available is hand sanitizers in multiple locations for staff and students. The district even gave staff the opportunity to get flu shots for free right at their school.
"Everyone is struggling right now. It's an up-hill battle, but it's one that we can at least be very proactive on. I think that responsible and prudent officials are doing just that," said Dr. Michael O'Shea with Springfield Local Schools.
District officials say they have not had extreme numbers of absences due to the flu and hope the trend continues. However, they say if a student or member of the staff is experiencing flu-like symptoms, they are encouraged to stay home.
