EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -
Evansville Police say they have received three different reports of counterfeit bills just this week. Police say the people spending those bills didn't know they weren't real.
EPD tells 14 News the exchange of counterfeit bills is a problem that comes and goes in Evansville. That's why they say it's especially important to double-check your money to make sure it's real before you spend it.
EPD Sergeant Jason Cullum says all three of those cases involved customers unknowingly trying to spend a counterfeit $20 bill at local businesses.
They say customers passed those bills to cashiers at the CVS on First Avenue and another at the Chuckles Gas Station on North Fares.
Cullum says some serial numbers on those bills did match up, so police do believe the cases are related.
"Obviously the issue with that is if somebody hands the clerk a couple of fake $20 bills and the clerk doesn't catch it, they put it into the register. The next customer may come up and make a purchase where they need change. Well now, the clerk inadvertently gives that fake money out to somebody else. When they go make their next purchase, they're unknowingly passing counterfeit money. So, it definitely creates an issue," Cullum told 14 News.
Police say whether spending or receiving money, make sure to check for tell-tale signs of counterfeit bills, such as the bill having a flat appearance or missing a watermark.
