Strange series of events leads to recovery of stolen vehicles

GIBSON CO., IN (WFIE) -

Gibson County Sheriff's Deputies say three cars were stolen between Friday and Sunday and that all three have been recovered. They say at least two of those thefts were connected.

Deputy Brad Garnett says the sheriff's office received a call of a domestic disturbance in Somerville, early Saturday morning. When they got to the scene, Garnett says they identified a stolen car.

"Upon doing a records check, they were able to locate a stolen vehicle, that had been reported in Oakland City by the Oakland City Police Department, late, I believe it was late Friday," Garnett said.

Later that night, Garnett says a Fort Branch police officer found an abandoned truck in a cemetery. The police then called the owner of the vehicle, Joan Dearing of Fort Branch, who had no idea it had been stolen.

"And they asked me, 'Was there a reason why my vehicle was in the cemetery.' I said, 'What vehicle?' and they said, 'Do you own a Mazda?' I said, 'Yes, I do,' and I said, 'No. I don't know of any reason it would be there," Dearing said.

Dearing says she was still on the phone with the police, when she noticed something strange outside.

"There was a red S10 in the ditch right down from the house," Dearing said.

Dearing says police later found out the truck here was stolen as well, and it appears that whoever stole the S10, ended up stuck in the ditch, proceeded to steal Dearing's Mazda, and then abandon it in the cemetery.

"We have our fair share of, you know, vehicle thefts. But like I said earlier, we have three within a 36-hour time frame. I mean, that's quite a few to have," Garnett said.

Garnett says all of these thefts were the result of leaving the keys inside the car. He says no arrests have been made yet, though they are investigating suspects.
