EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

While planning for the construction of a pedestrian bridge over the Lloyd Expressway, crews found remnants of an unmarked cemetery near the former State Hospital grounds.

The city says they're now working with archaeologists and scientists to see what to do next.

14 News talked with city engineer, Pat Keepes. He says, right now, it's too early to tell whether or not that discovery will affect the timeline of the project or the placement of supports and piers for that pedestrian bridge, but he's hoping any changes won't be significant.

The pedestrian bridge will be the link between the State Hospital grounds and recreational facilities on the north side of the Lloyd Expressway, like Wesselman Park and Wesselman Nature Preserve.

"We want a safe passage and connectivity over the highway to those recreational facilities. So, it's a very important project to us locally," Keepes said.

Keepes says, right now, the project is still projected to begin construction in early 2015 or before.
