The Smith Mills Fire Department needs your help in securing a federal grant for a new building.
"Our station is 110 years old and with our budget we can't keep up on the repairs on this old of a building so we're going to have to replace it," Coghill said.
Members of the Smith Mills Lions Club went door-to-door Saturday morning asking residents to fill out a short survey. When 250 surveys are collected, the department will be able to apply for the $500,000 grant.
"It seems like it's a never-ending battle trying keep it from leaking and bracing it up so it doesn't fall in and so forth and so on and it's tapping our budget," Coghill said.
More than 51% of the community must be considered low income in order to be considered for the grant. Coghill said they should meet the guidelines because they have a large retired population.
"Before we'll have a building here we're probably looking at a year and a half to two years. We're going to have to make it last that long, we don't have any choice right now"
Officials say if you didn't receive a survey yet, they will be working for the next few weeks to get them distributed. As soon as they receive enough surveys, they will apply for the grant.
