2012 was the warmest on record for the U.S.

Every state in the U.S. had above average temperatures in 2012 and as a whole, the country experienced the warmest year every on record.

According to the National Climatic Data Center, the average temperature was 55.3 degrees in 2012, a full degree above the old record from 1998 and 3.2 degrees above the 20th century average.

Not only was it a warm year, but it was also the 15th driest year on record in the U.S.  Drought affected 61 percent of the nation at it's peak in July.

2012 was also a year of extreme weather events.  The U.S. Climate Extremes Index shows the year was the second most extreme year on record with 11 disaster that reached 1 billion dollars or more.
